Call for the revision of the ban on women’s education in Afghanistan

The international Board and staff of the Eurasian Regional Center of ICYF (ICYF-ERC) are deeply saddened and concerned by the ban imposed in Afghanistan that prohibits women from receiving higher education.

Under Article 26 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the right to education is one of the fundamental rights. Education should be accessible to each individual without discrimination on the basis of the principle of equal opportunity. The prohibition against women acquiring education is a violation of this fundamental right.

We are proud of being headquartered in Azerbaijan, where the first secular girls’ school in the Muslim East was opened. We request that the decision made in Afghanistan be revised as soon as possible in light of the Islamic religion’s teachings on women’s rights.
