“Historical sources, including the 19th century plans of the city, mentioned the names of three main gates of Shusha fortress: Ganja, Iravan and Agoghlan, each respectively looking in direction of the city of Ganja (modern Azerbaijan), the city of Iravan (modern Armenia, then Iravan Khanate and Iravan Governorate being predominantly populated by Azerbaijanis) and Aghoghlan castle (modern Azerbaijan).
Unfortunately, the occupation of Shusha in 1992 and the three-decade long Armenian occupation left its scars on the condition of the historical fortress. Following the liberation of Shusha in November 2020, in accordance with the decision of the Government of Azerbaijan the reconstruction activities have started in the fortress.”
