By the relevant decree of H.E. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, 2021 has been declared as the ‘Year of Nizami Ganjavi’ in the Republic of Azerbaijan on the occasion of the 880th birthday anniversary of Nizami Ganjavi, a great poet of Azerbaijan and Muslim East at large.
Nizami Ganjavi is a poet born and lived in the city of Ganja in the 12th century. His poems not only contributed to the world of literature, but also covered many philosophical problems, technical sciences such as astronomy and chemistry, and built a historical bridge between the history of the ancient world and the period in which he lived. Nizami Ganjavi’s ‘Leyli and Majnun’ remains one of the greatest love stories in world history, and this work has been referred to by many world thinkers over the following centuries. Ganjavi’s main poetical work is a set of five long narrative poems known as ‘Khamsa (Quinary)’ which includes: ‘Khosrow and Shirin’; ‘Leyli and Majnun’; ‘The Book of Alexander the Great’; ‘The Seven Beauties’ and ‘The Treasury of Misteries’.
Taking into account the importance and supranational scope of Nizami Ganjavi’s works, which represent a wide range of cultures, the Eurasian Regional Center of ICYF will be honoured to act for the promotion of Ganjavi’s legacy at the international level within the framework of this year.
