The Eurasian Regional Center of the Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum (ICYF-ERC) joins the global community in observing Mine Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the devastating impact of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) on communities worldwide.
Every year on April 4th, Mine Awareness Day serves as a reminder of the devastating impact these remnants of war have on innocent lives. Landmines and UXO continue to pose significant threats to the safety, security, and well-being of individuals, families, and entire communities, long after conflicts have ended.
ICYF-ERC recognizes the urgent need for common action to address the scourge of landmines and UXO. These indiscriminate weapons not only cause tragic loss of life but also hinder socio-economic development and impede humanitarian assistance efforts in affected areas.
In commemorating Mine Awareness Day, ICYF-ERC reaffirms its unwavering support for initiatives such as The International Youth Platform for Protection of Mine Victims’ Rights established during the International Symposium in Indonesia in 2023, aimed at promoting mine risk education, facilitating clearance operations, providing legal assistance to victims, and advocating for the universalization and implementation of relevant international treaties, including the Ottawa Treaty.
Furthermore, ICYF-ERC underscores the importance of adopting comprehensive approaches that integrate mine action efforts into broader frameworks encompassing peacebuilding, humanitarian aid, development, and human rights initiatives.
